Slow Mobile Broadband Speeds

An interesting (and not really surprising) article on the BBC website suggests that Mobile Broadband providers aren’t producing the goods when it comes to actual download speeds versus their advertised speeds.

Research has shown that the average download speed for mobile broadband is 1.1Mbps – some way off the average advertised speed of 4.5Mbps. Vodafone, who have a maximum download speed of “up to” 7.2Mbps come off worst – with an actual speed of just 1.3Mbps.

Whilst a download speed of 1.1Mbps is enough for most users, the principle still remains – mobile broadband providers are bandying about big figures for download speeds to hook consumers into a contract. It may be a good idea for Ofcom to consider introducing a requirement for all providers to also include average ACTUAL download speeds alongside the theoretical maximums.
